WINNIPEG - A first court appearance for a Winnipeg city councillor and former NHL player accused of domestic violence has been put over for three weeks. A lawyer appearing on behalf of former Winnipeg Jet Thomas Steen asked for the case to be put over to July 14. Steen, who is facing two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats, did not appear in court. He took a brief absence from council when the charges were first laid but has since returned. Steen has removed himself from the Winnipeg Police Board while the charges make their way through the courts. He is accused of assaulting a woman at a Winnipeg restaurant May 1, and has been released on conditions that he not contact the alleged victim and abstain from alcohol and other intoxicants. Steen played for 14 years with the Jets before he retired in 1995. He ran unsuccessfully for the federal Conservatives in 2008 and has served on city council since 2010.
