London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo returned to practice on Thursday for the first time since suffering a back injury 10 days ago. As he usually does, Romo missed Wednesdays session as the Cowboys began preparations for this Sundays game against Jacksonville in London. He has skipped most Wednesday practices this season as part of his regular schedule to ease the workload on his surgically repaired back. Romo, who underwent surgery for a herniated disc in his back late last year, again injured his back in the third quarter of an overtime loss to Washington on Oct. 27, although he did return for the final series of regulation and Dallas lone possession of overtime. The Cowboys initially said Romo had a contusion, but further tests eventually revealed two transverse process fractures. The transverse process is a small bony projection off the right and left side of each vertebrae. Like any injury, we have to get out test it out and see what you can do, push it a little bit, said Romo, who indicated he still has soreness and will continue treatment each day. At the same time, you have to be smart. Romo missed last Sundays game against Arizona and Brandon Weeden struggled in a 28-17 loss to the Cardinals. After Romo took part in the Cowboys meetings and walk-through at the hotel on Wednesday, Weeden took the first-team reps in practice. Weeden would again be the starter on Sunday if Romo is unable to play, but Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones expects his three-time Pro Bowl quarterback to be on the field. Im anticipating him playing, theres no reason to think that he wont, said Jones on Thursday. My expectations are for him to play. Romo was in pads while speaking with the media on Thursday and didnt appear comfortable, looking stiff at the podium. He didnt give any indication as to whether he would play on Sunday, saying only he would be taking a day-by-day approach. Its improving each day, he added. I think if we do something positive each day, theres a good chance. If youre always waiting until you feel great to play, youll only play a couple of games a year. You compete, you go play. Theres guys who are banged up every week and go play. No one cares (if youre hurt) when you step out on the field on Sunday, you just go out and play. If Romo is unable to play Sunday, hell have extra time to rest with the Cowboys on their bye next week. Raul Jimenez Jersey . Simon (10-3) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 6 1-3 innings to break a tie with the Dodgers Zack Greinke and Cardinals Adam Wainwright for the NL lead in victories. Simon went to spring training as a relief pitcher and moved into the starting rotation when Mat Latos was recovering from elbow and knee surgeries. Miguel Layun Jersey . Oribe Peralta Jersey .Y. -- Phil Jackson lost out on his preferred coach, but hes working hard on keeping his star player.CLEVELAND -- Browns coach Mike Pettine isnt quite ready to name his starting quarterback. Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel havent convinced him they deserve the job. Pettine had been expected to announce Wednesday whether Hoyer or Manziel, the hyped rookie, would start the Sept. 7 opener at Pittsburgh during a teleconference. But the decision has been delayed and could carry through Clevelands third preseason game on Saturday, Pettine said. Clevelands coaching staff will meet Wednesday night and could then choose a starter. "Well decide later if were ready to name a starter," Pettine told reporters. "We could have one named, and Im not ruling that out. Thats something were going to discuss. And if we do have to wait until after the next game, so be it. "Were going to weigh everybodys opinion. Im very clearly on record: I would like to make a decision, and thats still very much a possibility." Pettines choice grew tougher after Hoyer and Manziel played poorly in a 24-23 exhibition loss at Washington on Monday night. Manziel also made an obscene gesture toward the Redskins sideline, an act Pettine called "extremely disappointing" and will likely result in a fine from the NFL. Pettine saidd Manziels actions on national TV will be factored into the decision on a starter.dddddddddddd "Well take into account all things quarterbacks A to Z," Pettine said. "So its body of work, its everything from the time they set foot in the building back in the spring up until today." Manziel said he was taunted by Redskins players and he responded by holding up his middle finger. Following the game, Manziel acknowledged "I shouldve been smarter." Pettine has preached to his players about staying poised and Manziel didnt show any in responding to the trash talk he was hearing from Washingtons defenders and bench. "We talk about Play like a Brown," Pettine said. "We want our guys to act like a Brown and we want this to be a first-class organization. We have hundreds, thousands of kids come to our training camp practices and look up to our players and that type of behaviour is unacceptable. "Its something thats part of football that you have to maintain your poise and your composure, especially at that position and he should know better than anyone that all eyes are on him. I know its something that will be addressed by the league and will be addressed internally." ' ' '
